Millwall Community Trust’s Disability Ambassadors George Saville and Jake Cooper visited Good Shepherd Primary School to visit one of our Move and Learn sessions on Monday afternoon.
Underpinned by the unique Joy of Moving methodology, the Move & Learn project is aimed at inspiring children of 9-10 years old of all abilities to move through play. We know that it’s extremely important to get this age range moving, as data from Sport England shows that 53% of children from Year groups 5 – 6 do not meet their target of being physically active for 60 minutes every day.
The Move & Learn project has been developed in partnership with the English Football League Trust (EFL Trust) and delivered with support from the Scottish Professional Football League Trust (SPFLT) the Club Community Organisations across the UK.
Upon arrival, Cooper and Saville took part in a general Q&A where the children were able to quiz them about things they have always wanted to know about professional football and Millwall. Following that, the duo helped the children complete their Joy of Moving booklets – as each session covers a different theme, dealing with important topics such as high cholesterol, the importance of drinking water and meal planning.
Cooper and Saville took part in activities where the children had to measure their heart rates during different levels of exercise.
Finally, both players accompanied the class onto the astroturf where they took part in physical activity - which included catching, dribbling, and tackling all whilst moving.
Tim Sells, Millwall Community Trust’s Football and Sports Development Manager said: “What an unbelievable experience for the children to have two Millwall players come in and help them with their Joy of Moving lesson.
“It is fantastic to be able to work with local schools and help educate the children on the importance of eating healthily and being physically active. We hope that we can work with more schools throughout Southwark and Lewisham in the future to deliver this fantastic programme and inspire as many of our young children as possible.”
