Millwall Football Club is pleased by today’s arrival of the Football Governance Bill to Parliament and joins the EFL in hoping that it proves to be a significant step forward in securing the long-term financial health and sustainability of the pyramid in this country.
Following the outcome of the Fan Led Review in 2021, the club has proactively and publicly championed the implementation of an Independent Regulator for the sport providing it had the powers, if necessary, to deliver financial redistribution, along with the introduction of tighter controls designed to protect clubs for the sake of their fan bases and their communities.
Millwall are hopeful that this landmark announcement is a catalyst for real and sustained change in the game and that the move serves to fix what is ultimately a broken financial model with a view, longer-term, to harnessing a fairer, more competitive, and ultimately more sustainable environment for all clubs to compete within. The club is also incredibly supportive of enhancements to mandated fan engagement protocols and is excited to liaise further with supporters above and beyond its requirements in the months and years ahead.
The club looks forward to continuing to support the EFL in its contributions towards the State of the Game Review, for which the Government has stated its commitment to as the basis for the Independent Regulator’s work moving forward.
Finally, Millwall would like to place on record its gratitude to all its local MPs, especially Clive Efford, for his and their outstanding engagement on this issue to date.
