During the fifth day of debate on Her Majesty’s Speech, The House of Lords debated the Government’s legislative agenda, including the responsibilities of The Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS). The impact football has on fans and communities was brought up by a few Lords, and Millwall Community Trust's (MCT) work was mentioned.
Millwall Community Trust work to engage, develop and educate the local community. From their ‘Hospital Heroes’ work to their food banks and Bursary Fund, they continue to show the positive influence football can have on people’s daily lives.
Lord Kennedy of Southwark, a long-time supporter of Millwall FC, briefly spoke on MCT’s work at The House of Lords, he said:
“My noble friends Lord Faulkner of Worcester and Lord Mann raised the issue of football. We need to give fans much more influence and power regarding their local football clubs. Local clubs are the lifeblood of their communities—I have supported Millwall my whole life and the Millwall Community Trust is a fantastic organisation; Sean Daly’s team has done really good work there. Football club community trusts all over the country are key parts of their communities, and we need to support them in the work that they do.”
This positive recognition of the work the Trust, and other community trusts, have done and continue to do for the community was appreciated. Football is a big part of society, and community trusts are a key to bringing football and the local communities together.
Sean Daly, CEO of the Community Trust, said: “We’re happy that our work here at the Trust is recognised and appreciated. Here at MCT, we aim to make an impact in the local community, and to see that effort garnering such support makes me glad to be a part of it."
