Millwall Community Trust (MCT) has consistently and continuously been a positive part of the local community. They have recently been recognised and awarded the 'Southwark Stands Together' award at the annual Southwark Civic Awards by Mayor Barrie Hargrove.
This new Civic Award has been introduced to celebrate those who work over and above the call of duty to promote equality, diversity, and inclusion, and enable good community relations, tolerance, and understanding. This award recognises an organisation that has made an outstanding contribution to enabling Southwark to be a more integrated, tolerant, welcoming, safe, and inclusive borough, which values its rich diversity. Building on the work of Southwark Stands Together, the award celebrates great practice to promote equality, inclusion, and good community relations.
To cite some of the things MCT has done in the community recognised by Southwark Council, the award said:
They have started “innovative programmes in Southwark schools and those from disadvantaged and socially excluded groups, working on crime reduction and community-based sport coaching sessions.
“During the various lockdowns and beyond, they worked to reduce social isolation and loneliness by providing food and medical drops for vulnerable families, as well as supporting front-line medical staff at local hospitals, providing food and meals, online fitness, financial and other support.
‘Hospital Heroes’ was a project conceived and implemented by MCT to support NHS frontline workers and their families. Their support covers a wide range of in-person or online sessions including: Yoga; Personal training ,Quizzes and on zoom Live chats with footballers and chefs.”
MCT has done so much more within the Southwark community alongside the initiatives mentioned above.
The award continued: “They have five main objectives: raising educational achievement, creating pathways to employment, building healthier lifestyles, community cohesion, and reducing crime. Their divert/crime reduction project with police in 2021 prevented 90 young people from receiving custodial sentences by diverting them into positive activities.
Community service, active citizenship, and volunteering are at the core of MCT and they have been driving equality, diversity, and inclusion in the borough this last year with the creation of the Millwall Romans who are based at St Paul’s Sports Ground Rotherhithe and recruit players and supporters from Southwark.”
When asked his thoughts about receiving the award, MCT CEO, Sean Daly, said: "Thank you to the Mayor of Southwark, Barrie Hargrove, and The Civic Office for awarding MCT with this outstanding award.
There are so many examples I could give to emphasise just how passionate MCT as a whole are about creating a great community! It's just great to see that the work we do within the Southwark community is not only impactful but also recognised and celebrated.
"MCT will continue to go above and beyond, and positively impact the community in any way we can."
