Millwall Romans have enjoyed another successful season on and off the pitch in 2021/22.
The Romans, an LGBTQI-friendly football team based in Rotherhithe, have seen their popularity and reach rise to new levels across the course of the campaign, with the organisation expanding to a second team amongst much, much more.
On the pitch, the club finished as runners-up in the London Unity League – backing up a title win the previous season – and reached the Semi-Finals of the National Cup, with The Romans also making history by becoming the first LGBTQI team to play a National League game at a professional club stadium.
Away from the field, however, The Romans are making bigger strides in raising awareness and encouraging inclusivity for all.In October 2021, members of the club attended the ‘From Allyship to Action’ seminar, held a Stamford Bridge and hosted by Clare Balding, aimed at tackling the issues surrounding LGBTQ+, and also what can be done to address hate towards the homophobic, transphobic and biphobic communities.
A month later, Millwall Football Club teamed up with The Romans to showcase the organisation ahead of Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces Day. In return, players from The Romans have shared their experiences with many members of Millwall Community Trust’s programmes, including those from the Post-16 academies, Lewisham College and local community groups.
The strong bond between The Lions and The Romans has continued to run further across 2021/22, with – in a first – squad members from both camps included in the launch of Millwall’s away kit, with, in addition, The Romans being nominated by Millwall for an EFL EDI (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion) Award.
The Romans, who have seen their success develop their numbers to 50 and a second team in Millwall Pride, offer open training for all on Wednesday nights from 7.30pm at St Paul’s Sports Ground, home of Fisher FC.
