Shaun Hutchinson and Matija Sarkic, the captain and first team goal keeper at Millwall Football Club, made a surprise visit to the St Paul's Sports Ground in Rotherhithe today, where the Millwall Community Trust's Post-16 Football and Education Programme was in full swing.
This programme is a haven for young football enthusiasts between the ages of 16 and 18, offering a unique 2-year Football & Education Scholarship. It welcomes both male and female players who are eager to take their soccer skills to the next level whilst studying for a BTEC in sport or A Levels of their choice.
The heart of this initiative lies in providing learners with a comprehensive football development programme alongside their education. It's a platform for them to not only hone their technical prowess but also refine their tactical understanding of the beautiful game whilst obtaining recognised qualifications.
Today our learners were delighted to have the talented duo of Sarkic and Hutchinson visit the program. They engaged in a lively Q&A session, generously sharing insights and anecdotes from their illustrious careers, all in the name of igniting the spark of inspiration among our young students.
Following the insightful Q&A, the players in the program took to the field, showcasing their skills in spirited matches. Sarkic and Hutchinson, like mentors on the sidelines, cheered them on, providing encouragement and motivation that can only come from seasoned professionals.
As the day came to a close, the attendees had the privilege of asking Sarkic and Hutchinson individual questions. The duo responded with wisdom and valuable advice, leaving a lasting impact on all those who sought their guidance.
Tim Sells, the Football and Sports Development Manager at Millwall Community Trust, couldn't contain his excitement, remarking: “What an unbelievable experience for everyone involved in the Post-16 programme today.
"Huge thanks to Matija Sarkic and Shaun Hutchinson for attending and playing a pivotal role in inspiring our next generation of football talent. This visit was not just a passing moment but a powerful reminder of the significance of football as a force for positive change in the community and an insight into what it takes to make it to the top level."
