Millwall Community Trust teamed up with representatives from “Bermondsey Pie ‘n’ Mash” and “Communications Workers Union” to feed 500 meals to vulnerable elderly people on Christmas Eve.
Pies were collected in the early hours on Christmas Eve from Manze’s pie shop at Tower Bridge and taken to St Paul’s Sports Ground in Rotherhithe where staff and volunteers kindly bagged up 500 pie n mash meals with a festive mince pie.
The scheme which was back by Southwark News, saw Bermondsey Pie ‘n’ Mash, Communications Workers Union, Millwall Community Trust and local volunteers, assemble the orders before being delivered all across Southwark.
Tammy and Jamie Jukes, of Bermondsey Pie ‘n’ Mash who worked incredibly hard in planning and coordinating the day, said: “The volunteers and in particular Tara and Wendy all went above and beyond and came from all over South East London showing true Cockney Christmas spirit. “We’ve had many emails and calls thanking us for providing this amazing gift at Christmas to those who needed it most”.
This scheme was only possible because of the kind generosity of donations made by “Communications Workers Union” and special thanks to Steve and Barry for leading on this and also giving up their time on Christmas Eve.
Richard White, Community Development Manager at Millwall Community Trust commented “Special thanks to Communications Workers Union (CWU) and Bermondsey Pie n Mash for making this cause possible. It was so inspiring to see so many local people turning up who had pre-registered to deliver the meals to our vulnerable elderly people in Southwark. The day highlighted that there are so many good people around that all want to help good causes and it was a joy seeing so many elderly people delighted in receiving a free pie n mash meal at their front door which hopefully gave them some festive joy”.
