Millwall ended the year on a high with an impressive 3-0 win.
Bouncing back to winning ways and ending the year on a high is what Millwall achieved on Sunday.
After a winless 3 game run, Millwall showed their dominance from minute 1 to 90 to secure a 3-0 win at home with 3 different goalscorers and, of course, a very important clean sheet.
A vital part of Millwalls success this season has been their set piece work and it nearly worked early on, twice, when both Emily Stanley and Maisie Joyce were unable to steer home from close range with a header and a volley respectively.
Chloe Burr was once again at the heart of most attacks Millwall provided and it was Chloe who got the opening goal, her brilliance saw her beat her marker and slotted finely into the far bottom corner. It had been coming for the Lionesses as Millwall piled on the pressure.
Amy Nash and Sophie Chapman were the two center halves and showed the strength off the ball as well as composure on it to pick out passes and get the side in a more dangerous area.
Millwall thought they had a second when there was a bundle in the penalty area but just after the ball had hit the net, the ref was quick to get the whistle to his lips to blow for a foul.
Denham would continue to sit back and play a damage limitation game. Chloe Burrs free kick almost went in, before good work from Lucy Bolitho played through Alyssa Miranda, who fired her shot just wide of the goal.
Only one up at the break Millwall went in rather frustrated that the game was not secured yet, but were to come out with the same intensity and tempo as the first.
The wide play was used well by Millwall as Liz O’Callaghan and Milly Penfold would continue to create havoc down that right hand side. Penfold did well with her quick feet to win two free kicks for Millwall from a dangerous area but were to no danger for Denham. Meanwhile, Liz kept getting the ball into the dangerous area but Millwall were unable to make the opposition pay.
She might be the smallest player in the team, but Emily Stanley had two headers back to back from corners that went just wide, the midfielder leapt well to get her head on it, but the crossbar and a catch from the keeper would deny her.
The pressure that Miranda and O’Callaghan would continue to create was relentless, offering chances and both could have scored late on to double the advantage of it, were it not for good saves.
Then finally the second, with a minute to go, a foul in the penalty area saw the referee give Millwall the chance to double the lead and as cool as you like Maisie Joyce slotted it home to secure the win.
However the action wasn’t finished, Denhams goalkeeper was then sinbinned meaning they were down to 10 men and then right at the end we sealed the deal.
Milly Penfold broke with pace, down the right and shot from a right angle, whether it took a deflection or not, that is up for debate, but the ball found the back of the net and it was 3-0 and a solid home win.
